Drivers in Pennsylvania may be interested in learning about how their state compares to others when it comes to fatal accidents involving large trucks. A recent report was released that shows that from 2009 to 2017 there was an increase in the United States in the number of big rig truck accidents that led to fatalities. During that time, 35,882 people died in accidents involving large trucks.
It is thought that some of these deaths could have been avoided if the law required big rig trucks to have speed-limiting technology as well as automatic emergency braking technology. Interestingly, between 2009 and 2016, truckers drove fewer miles on the road than they did in previous years. Still, the number of accidents and the number of fatal accidents increased.
The data shows that in 2017, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, and California topped the list of states with the highest number of large truck crash fatalities. Washington, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Idaho were the states that showed the largest increase by percentage in the number of large truck crash fatalities from between 2009 and 2017.
Many of the states that have the highest large truck crash fatalities are also states that allow large trucks to drive at 70 mph or more. Some doubt the wisdom of allowing a big rig that can weigh in excess of 80,000 pounds to barrel down the road at 70 miles an hour alongside many smaller vehicles. The challenge for larger trucks that are fully loaded is that it is going to take them longer to slow down if there is danger.
If a person was a victim of an accident involving a big rig truck, they may be entitled to compensation for their losses and damages. A personal injury attorney may be able to meet with the individual and discuss the particulars of the case. The lawyer could serve as a negotiator between the victim and the insurance company. If necessary, they might even represent their client in court.
