What are my first steps after a car accident?

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2021 | Personal Injury |

Accidents happen to everyone. Sometimes it is a missed email at work, but other times it means a dented fender and sore neck.

An auto collision can have a profound impact on your life. Be prepared ahead of time so you get the treatment you need and the compensation you deserve. Keep these tips in mind when your next accident happens.

Collect relevant information

Even if you think there is minimal damage and no injuries, you should still document the scene and gather important information, including:

  • The driver’s full name and contact details
  • All auto insurance and registration information
  • Photos of the accident
  • Names and phone numbers of any witnesses

Notify your insurance

Your required personal injury protection insurance covers your medical costs up to the limits of the policy. If you were not at fault, you may be able to recover costs from the other driver. Your policy is either a limited tort or full tort coverage and controls how you can deal with the other party’s insurance.

See a doctor

After a crash, you may feel fine, but there is a good chance you are overlooking injuries. Get in to see either your primary care physician or an urgent care doctor within 72 hours of your accident. You can uncover any hidden internal injuries, prevent further damage and establish a treatment plan.

Knowing what to do immediately after a collision can prevent it from taking over your life. A legal advocate can help you determine what further steps you should take.
